Well situated like a child’s building blocks, the house is an unassuming abstract geometric composition embedded in nature.
Two blocks of wood gently harmonise with their surroundings on a rocky outcrop overlooking Lake Memphrémagog in the province of Quebec. Two rectangular volumes, one on top of the other, form a house, in a project by Yiacouvakis Hamelin Architects.
The upper block appears to float. It rests on the lower one, but it is displaced. It protrudes from the lower volume on two sides, allowing the creation of sheltered outdoor spaces. The displacement between the two blocks also creates a space for a courtyard on the roof of the lower block.
The sober but elegant style is allied with nature, which can be seen through the large windows. Lightweight lamps in black that go completely unnoticed have been chosen in order not to hinder the passage of light and avoid distractions.
