BabelStudio, the Bilbao architecture practice founded by Andrea García Crespo, Michael Schmidt and Andrea Emmanuel Laredo, has completed an interesting project on the outskirts of the Urkiola natural park in Vizcaya. This is Azkarraga, a single-family home with a strong personality in which a gastronomic space has been successfully integrated, and has become one of the region’s architectural landmarks due to its originality and elegance.
Formally austere, Azkarraga immediately stands out due to its imposing façade of black-tinted pine wood slats. Outstanding. The roof is also distinctive, with the main volume gabled and the annex flat, while the use of natural flat ceramic tiles imbues the building with personality. The openings are equally successful. They are in a large format, with sliding doors integrated into the façades, and provide spatial continuity between the interior and the exterior.
